It looks like reward
retrieval... Computational Neuroscience
  • Interests:
    • Closed loop temporal sequence learning / control.
Autonomous agents control their inputs and not their outputs.
This becomes clear with the chicken-egg problem #2: The chicken wants to keep the egg. The farmer, however, wants to have the egg. While the chicken perceives itself as a closed loop system the farmer perceives the chicken as an open loop system: input (food), put-put and output (egg).
    • How can a reactive system turn itself into a proactive system?
    • Limbic system
    • Spike timing dependent plasticity
    • Constructivist models of temporal sequence learning.
    • Robotics
    • Applications of control/signal theory in the field of CN
    • Embodiment
    • Deep brain stimulation
    • Wireless transmission of bio signals
    • Image processing
  • It's revealed: robots are more human than you dare to think :-)

Teaching

I'm teaching or have taught:

Film (check out my IMDB page or Bratwust and Haggis productions ;)

Sociology of mass media ("Kommunikationswissenschaften und Publizistik")

I've been interested in communication and sociology since I started as an undergraduate at the university. In particular I'm interested in Niklas Luhmann's theory of social systems. His theory is my underlying paradigm. I admire Niklas Luhmann and I can only encourage you to read his work. He's great!

Electronics projects (which might be useful for others)
  • Preamplifier for the long shotgun mic ME-88
  • USB DUX: data acquisition under Linux. No reverse engineering. Just plain forward engineering towards Linux! The commercial project.
  • Video: development of special devices for our stereo-vision-project
    • A simple example: the STEREO-SWITCH which then evolved to this project:
    • Synchronize 2 cameras to capture stereo without interlace effects. We grab 3D-information with a standard BT848-grabber (odd field left, even field right): Circuit diagram :-) and the timing diagram.
    • ...and finally one of my early projects for medical data aquisition (funded by my GP Dr König in 1990 :-).

Tux Computing

Well, it's just a random collection of some useful stuff I've done or maintaining. Nothing about compiler architectures or about any crusade about a new programming language. ;-)

(c) Bernd Porr - ECG lab - RUB EEG, ECG, EMG, ... :

Psychology I like Maturanas ideas which lead to the theory of constructivism (see: Sociology of mass media). Regarding Social Constructivism have a look at this page: "Bochumer Arbeitsgruppe für Sozialen Konstruktivismus und Wirklichkeitsprüfung".

(c) Bernd Porr Theatre (and more): I am a light-designer/technician (technical coordination/planning/...). I taught the lighting module at boSKop (here are some nice results). My last fringe production in Germany: König Ubu. The last "serious" project was Heilige und Heiden in Aplerbeck (technical docs). And then I went to Scotland... I was founding member of the community radio station "Radio Microwelle" and produced literally hundreds of hours of radio programmes. Radio-plays ("Der gute Gott von Manhattan" - Bachmann, "Improtheater Doppelkopf" - Lammers,Porr, "Ozon" - Porr, Borhard), Radio-Art.
